Beauty care for you(r clothes)

In the course of a week long project, a concept was envisioned for a new standard of Panasonic front loading washing machines for the Chinese and Japanese market.

The strategy which was developed was to integrate Panasonic's washing machine department into their highly successful beauty product department as well as present three machine designs and their respective user interfaces. This 'sprint' project in Panasonic's beautiful office in Kyoto enabled me to showcase my interdisciplinary skill-set as a designer.
Key insights were gathered from my previous work experience on WM design for the Chinese market such as the rapidly progressing digital revolution in the home appliance sector which is far ahead of the Japanese market as well as the culturally unique laundry habits which are not being addressed by current Japanese WM design.

The three concepts were presented at the end of the week for the management members as well as the washing machine department of Panasonic. The concept of Beauty for you(r clothes) was very well received and prompted discussions about possible implementation. The user interface designs also received praise for their originality and visionary character. Towards the end of the project, it was important for me to stress that this concept should not only be a cosmetic solution, but would require a holistic service design concept to truly be achieved.

This wall-mounted 1-2kg washing machine gently washes delicate clothes as well as uses hot water to sterilize towels and underwear in record times. The frame extends so that laundry can be hung up to dry immediately after washing.

With its customizable exterior, this washing machine can proudly be presented in the living room for guests to admire. The soft transition from frame to the front gives this machine a luxurious image and a slight retro touch through the round door.

Through its architectural design and gradient frosted glass front, this washing machine can integrate itself into its environment. The animated touch display gives it a unique and high-quality user experience. Its IoT capabilities provide useful functions to optimize washing functions.
